My Small Closet Makeover & Other Small Space Tips
I’ve been putting off organizing my closet since we moved into our house in 2020. It was a daunting task because I knew both Brady + I had a good amount of clothing and we shared one little closet… Week after week we’d get dressed + couldn’t find anything to wear. We’d battle with pushing each other's clothes over to the side so we could see what we could wear
One day, I had a genius idea come to me - I’d separate our closets! I honestly don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. We have a spare bedroom with a small closet + we weren’t properly utilizing it. So with Brady’s stamp of approval, I got to work.
I moved all his clothes into the spare room which is also his work office. It made sense because he works remotely + is in the office everyday anyway. It gave me so much joy organizing his clothes by color + sorting it by type. He was pleased with his organized closet.
My closet felt a little more challenging.
I knew I had to purge, but also get creative with my organization since it was a small space. My vision was for my closet to look like a cute boutique pop-up where I could see every single item of clothing. It needed to be aesthetically appealing to the eye so getting dressed didn’t seem like a daunting task but more fun + efficient! Here are five things I did and you can do too if you’re living with a small closet + you want to maximize your space:
TIP ONE.
Empty your closet.
Like literally empty it out. I know it sounds like a lot but its important to sort through all your clothes, shoes, belts, scarfs, etc. You’ll find the pair of leather pants you swore your friend borrowed + never gave back. Nope, it was just in the back of your closet.. on the floor. Or you realize you don’t need that shirt you’ve had since 2012. This will also give you the opportunity to give your closet a good deep cleaning.
TIP TWO.
Use matching hangers.
So after you empty your closet, it’s time to start organizing it. A small way to level up your closet is by using the same type of hangers throughout. This will make your closet look neat + cohesive. My choice of hangers are the slim, velvet ones but there are a ton of options on Amazon. Also fun hack: Use shower hooks to hang your jeans.
TIP THREE.
Organize by seasons.
The key to small closets is smart organization + a great way to make more room in your closet is to organize by season. Store your denim shorts + sandals in a storage box for the winter + in the summer, pack up + put away your coats + fuzzy sweaters. Keep your stored clothing in a storage closet or under your bed for easy access. These are a few storage box options:
TIP FOUR.
Utilize every corner of your closet.
Add a dresser organizer under your hung clothes to make room for your athletic wear. Or add a shoe rack for your most worn shoes for easy access. Add hooks to the interior doors to hang your purses or scarves. Use every inch of your closet.
TIP FIVE.
Organize by type + color.
Last tip to level up your small closet is to organize by the type of clothing it is i.e blouses, jeans, dresses, etc. + then color coordinate from there. Once you organize by type of clothing, organize by color and/or print. This organization has helped me cut down the time it takes me to get dressed for pretty much anything!
